Design a modern multilingual museum audio guide that helps visitors choose between quick orientation and deeper learning. The product needed to improve access to exhibit content, support different visit lengths, and make the museum experience easier, more interactive and more memorable.

02 / What needed to change

Research included a screening survey, 8 moderated 45-minute interviews, competitor analysis, empathy mapping, personas, user stories, a journey map, job stories and three usability-testing rounds. The strongest problems were time pressure, negative past guide experiences, navigation difficulty, language barriers, low interactivity and uncertainty about ticket or guide value.

03 / Research findings: audio-guide adoption

85.7% of survey respondents had used an audio guide, but they still reported navigation problems, weak sound quality, lack of interactivity and discomfort with public headphones. Interviews confirmed three hypotheses: visitors avoid guides when they take too much time, bad past experiences reduce adoption, and people still want richer educational context when the guide is convenient and well structured.

The solution introduced two tour depths: a simplified version for short, understandable highlights and a full version for history, context and artistic analysis. Core features included multilingual audio, route creation, artwork scanning, subtitles, personal notes, saved tours, quizzes, profile access and ticket purchase. The interaction model keeps visitors oriented while they scan, listen, save or continue a route.

Three usability rounds shaped the final app. Round 1 improved audio/subtitle switching, notes, scan recovery, route navigation, saved tours and Play visibility. Round 2 simplified notes, quiz access and audio settings. Round 3 improved navigation buttons, tour-card hierarchy, quiz results, saved tours, contrast and typography.
